MX4000 Firmware upgrade gone wrong

I ran the "MX_Firmware_V38_includes_V21A_V06B_V02A" upgrade utility on an MX4000 V06 and by default it only selected the power module upgrade, the upgrade utility showed it discovered the UPS, then it cleard (sic) the existing firmware, then hung and went no further. I waited 20 minutes and nothing changed so I closed the upgrade utility and ran it again. It couldn't detect the UPS.

I ran the upgrade utility again and this time selected the system board upgrade as well, that went okay and the UPS restarted.

Now, the UPS front LCD shows internal com fault (U00E error code) and is on automatic bypass, the power module fans are running at a high speed.

I ran the upgrade utility again and it fails, saying "the UPS must be on bypass mode". Well, the front LCD says it in bypass mode. Also the LCD shows the battery charge level at 0%, even though the internal batteries are charged.

Is there a recovery utility I can run to finish the power module firmware upgrade? The upgrade utility comes with .s19 files, could I use hyperterminal to manually transfer the firmware?

Update: I have spoken with Eaton UPS MX4000 tech support here in Australia, they do not have any recovery software. They do not have access to an older version firmware so I can try to flash back, they will see if any of their techs have a copy. They will email the software developers and see if there is a solution.

Or I can get a service tech out and pay for a power module replacement. All because their firmware upgrade software failed.

I think Michael is talking about an Eaton (previously MGE) UPS:

As such, troubleshooting steps for an APC UPS might not give the expected results.

Correct, it is an Eaton/MGE/Pulsar MX4000.

I have tried the suggested brain dead procedure, no change. The UPS still shows internal com fault and the power module fans run at a high speed.

Hoping for someone to have recovery software or a procedure to re-flash the power module.

I hope someone can help you out, but I don't think many of the folks here have much familiarity with Eaton UPSes. I don't see any general support forum for their products, but you might try their [phone support at this link|http://www.eaton.com/Electrical/USA/Support/index.htm].
