Is this unused UPS still ok to use or do I need to buy another one?

We have an unused APC Smart-UPS RC 3000 RM XL that has sat in a box for 8 years. We are renovating the server room and it has been suggested that this can be used to replace the ring of car batteries currently in use (!). Will this work or is it advisable to get a new one instead?

You would need to take it out and test the system to see if it operates as expected.

As it relates to the batteries they are more than likely toast and need to be replaced. That is your starting point along with confirming the history of the hardware.

If you know first hand this equipment was simply pulled out of service due to an upgrade no problem.

If however you have no clue why it’s been sitting there and may potentially be damaged / defective. You’ll need to test and validate the system is fully operational in all aspects prior to commissioning it into service.

Most 3000 or 3K UPSs will only handle 2100 to 2700 watts max. Now that gets a little funny depending on input voltage as well.

That said you said replace a ring of car batteries how many of those are we talking about and what are they powering

I know why it's been sitting there, it was purchased for a project 8 years ago but the project was cancelled. I believe the box is even still sealed (I'm in the UK and this unit is in India).

As it happens I have calculated the needs for the new server room and 3kVA is not sufficient anyway, so I'll be going for a new 5kVA UPS + 5kVA additional battery.

You better physically inspect all battery cells for cracks, leakage, bulging etc.

Validate all cells with a certified conductance meter to measure the internal resistance of each cell and confirm its within the battery manufacturer specifications.

Follow up with completing a load test with a carbon pile tester for each cell when they are 100% charged.

Any serious Enterprise site will have all the above tools and more to help validate and commission their UPS hardware along with a variable transformer to test the AVR circuitry.

Good Morning.

99% of the time the UPS will be ok. It may just need new batteries.

Power the UPS up, and see if it goes online. It will most probably have a battery alarm.

As @Teken  and others have said. If the UPS is new more than likely all your going to need is batteries. Batteries usually in perfect condition and maintained only last for 3 to 5 years. Just sitting they discharge and corroded internally.

That said an older UPS may not have the more up to date sensors and ability to take newer cards. This may limit you some.

Also may I ask why the 5 battery packs? If you are needing that much extra runtime it would be more beneficial and cost less (budgets time headache) in the long run to look into an ATS, second ups to split the load, and/or small generator. I have used those packs a lot and from experience can tell you the cost (buying and upkeep) almost never keep up with the added limited uptime you get from them.
