Is there software that will save designated app data prior to shutdown?

I have a PowerMac (OS 10.4) hooked up to an APC Back-UPS RS 800 with APC's PowerChute Personal Edition installed and functioning.

Is there an APC software package that will save the data of a designated application before closing it during an automatic power-related shutdown? The existing PCPE software just shuts down the computer, letting the OS do a force quite of all open apps -- thus losing any data that has not been saved.

I work on Photoshop image files, with each one taking hours to complete. I try to remember to save my work every 30 minutes or so, but sometimes the phone rings, fire alarms go off, fellow employees suddenly go postal... In other words, I need something that remembers to back up my work prior to a sudden power-related shutdown when I can't. Thanks.

Rich

Hi Rich,

It sounds like you want a hibernation mode on your MAC. From what I understand this is not a standard feature on 10.4 but it seems there are some add-ons out there that enable this feature. I have no experience with any of them but you might want to take a look. If you do try one you will most likely have to switch to using MAC's native shutdown since I am not aware of any APC software that will allow hibernation on a MAC.

Some of my colleagues might be able to chime in with a better answer.

Hey Rich,

Saw your new post here and thought I'd chime in again.

APC does not have any other OS X software available for UPS's, so what you see/get in PCPE 1.3.4 is currently all their is.

Maybe there is a third party software of some sort that will give you the ability to run a command file or something, which could be scripted to close applications and save data?

I also wonder if we could work around the issue by finding a Photoshop feature that might automatically save at a regular interval, covering the 'I walked away and forgot to save' circumstance.

-Mike
