How to recover password of APC Matrix 3000?

I'm working on resurrecting an older Matrix 3000 with an XR battery box. Before I buy some 75ah batteries I decided to dust it off and give it a try with some 17ah batteries. Connected them to the yellow plugs, put them in the XR battery box, and fired it up.

Unit comes up but when I try to enter the password it says wrong password. Guess I forgot. I know that you could reset it with the software and a serial cable but I don't have the software and I have a number of straight through cables.

So question: Is there a procedure to reset the password I can use with putty/hyperterm?

Are you referring to the password on the LCD display or the Network Management interface? For the LCD you can see the following FAQ:
