I need help coming up with a base shopping list for my supervisor.
What I am looking for is a broad list of items I need to identify and budget.
My goals:
1) Have each server auto shut down after a predefined period of power interruption. The interval may be either specific to a individual server or a group of servers depending on number of UPSs purchased.
2) Provide backup power to some equipment for 2 hrs at a minimum, while the rest of the equipment only needs 30 minutes.
Here is my inventory:
5 servers (may grow)
3 switches
1 router
1 monitor
1 KVM switch
1 WAP
SAN & Backup Device may get added
My Questions:
1) I am currently looking at getting 2 smart UPS. Will this be able to meet my needs?
2) What other 'accessories' will I need to include if I only get two UPSs?
Proposed shopping list
2 Smart UPS
PowerChute Business Edition
Thanks.

Due to budget reasons I am considering a pair of SUA2200RMXL3U and network management cards AP9617. In the event we need additional run time I can add addtional battery packs as needed.
Does this make sense? It is about 1/3 the cost the low end Symmetra model.
I am hoping that with the NMCs each server would be able to receive a signal from its UPS and begin an auto shut down sequence.
Thanks.

Hello,
The primary source of power draw in your situation will be the 5 servers. This is also what you will need to worry about shutting down. Two SmartUPS, as long as they have the capacity to hold the servers, and our Interface Expander card, AP9607CB, will give you PowerChute Business Edition graceful shutdown support. You can configure different shutdown sequences depending on runtime. Two hours can be a hefty runtime expectation, and we would recommend Extended Run Battery Packs off your SmartUPS to complete the configuration. Business Edition needs direct 1 to 1 communication from the UPS to the server, via serial cable, to initiate the shutdown.
What I would recommend for you solution, is one primary UPS source. Our Symmetra LX line would have the capability to handle your load, with room for future expansion. The LX would come pre-installed with a Network Management Card, which puts the UPS on the network. This allows you to view/configure/monitor UPS functions via HTTP, Telnet, SSH, etc from any networked station. The prime benefit of an NMC is using PowerChute Network Shutdown on your servers. These perform the same shutdown functions and configuration options of Business Edition, except it communicates over the network and not direct serial communication. The LX line also has multiple options for Extended Run Battery Packs to give you any desired runtime based on your load.
