Graceful shutdown of VMs and ESXi server

Hello, 

Our infrastructure contains 1x Dell PowerEdge R430, 1x Dell EqualLogic PS4210 and a few switches and routers. The server is running ESXi 6.0 (paid version) and runs all our virtual machines. Soon we'll add an another server and create a HA cluster and that server should be protected with the UPS as well.

What we'd like to do is to configure graceful shutdown for virtual machines and the ESXi server itself in case of power failure. 

What do we need in order to do that? I saw that there are different models of NMC cards, do we need a special one to run the whole thing with ESXi 6.0 or can it be even a AP9617 model? Can we configure it to run with vCenter instead of with standalone servers etc?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Hi,

What is the exact model of the UPS? You will find the information on the back or bottom of the unit on a bar code sticker.

Assuming the UPS is compatible with the AP9617 you should use PowerChute Network Shutdown to power down the hosts and VMs. For help please review Application Note 180, PowerChute Network Shutdown VMware User's Guide, and PowerChute Network Shutdown Installation Guide. We also offer many Knowledge Base documents on the subject. Just click on the Knowledge Base link above and search on ESXi.

Thank you Bill.

I was just wondering if there is any compatibility matrix for the NMC card available as we have a APC-Smart UPS RM 3000VA with AP9617 card installed. 

Anyway, I'll try to implement it with this equipment we have and hope that the card will work fine with ESXi 6.0.
