Fault: Batt Soft Start on SMX3000RMLV2U which support can not seem to resolve.

This was originally posted on APC forums on 6/7/2013

Hello,

Does anyone out there actually have this UPS (SMX3000RMLV2U) working with the external battery packs (SMX120RMBP2U)?

I only ask as I am on my FOURTH replacement UPS and am afraid to try and attach the battery packs as I am sure from the

previous three experiences it will do the same thing.

Problem:

As soon as the SMX040 or the SMX039-2 battery cable is attached to the UPS it gives the fault BATT Soft Start.  This is with nothing attached to the other end of the extension cable.  It has happened THREE times to far.

"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

  Albert Einstein

Detail:

Brand new SMX3000RMLV2U.  Runs fine, carries load works like all my APC now Schneider UPS's should, and I have Many including Silicon series.

We purchased NEW battery packs SMX120RMBP2U for the NEW SMX3000RMLV2U UPS's because these are in remote closets and we wanted longer run times.  These have been mounted in an APC NetShelter Half Height racks.  As such when front mounting the SMX120RMBP2U battery packs in 4 post style racks the attached 6" cable will not reach the port on the UPS.  Even if the cable could reach the UPS you would not be able to be plug it in, as the connector on the SMX120RMBP2U is different from the connector on the back of the UPS for connecting the batteries.  It has little tabs on it.  Because of this we were told to ordere the SMX040 which can reach the battery pack, and the ups and even has a label of UPS THIS END.

Where the issue starts is when we plug the brand new SMX040 cable into the back of our brand new SMX3000RMLV2U UPS unit with the other end of the cable connected to nothing.  As soon as we turn on the UPS we get the message to contact APC support and the Fault of Batt Soft Start.  And now the internal battery reads .03v.  Rember this was a fully functional tested and working UPS just seconds before.

Please any suggestions?  Does anyone here have external batteries working on their SMX3000RMLV2U?

My Fourth UPS will be here shortly and I would really like to use the 2500.00 in batteries we have for it 3x SMX120RMBP2U but would really like to have a working UPS.

Charles.

Was this problem able to be resolved? We are now experiencing the same fault.

SMX3000RMLV2U with 4x SMX120RMBP2U's. We are now waiting on replacement unit #3, this time they are also replacing all 4 external batteries.

As we are about to receive the 4th UPS, we tried the cable only option

after we broke the first ups trying it with the battery connected.

In both of these user's cases, have they made sure they are at the latest firmware Revision on the SMX 3000 UPS before connecting all these external batteries ?

( which are UPS 6.0 or UPS 2.1 depending on whether its ID:23 or ID: 10 )

I know at least for a start I will be looking up your cases and escalate as necessary. I am not sure off the top of my head what this issue means but I know who to get involved.

Sorry! You can adjust your email preferences if you want (but I know you shouldn't have to deal with spam) but we are constantly trying to find ways to combat spam like CAPTCHA and requiring email verification/activation and unfortunately, some spam does get through once in a while.

What happens if you first plug the SMX040 into the External battery module (SMX120 ) and then plug it into the SMX 3000 ?  That process would make more sense to me due to the auto-sensing the SMX's have. If you plug the SMX040 into the UPS with nothing at the end of it perhaps the UPS thinks it has NO batteries connected period !

Yes, they contacted me for additional information and had me try one more

thing that did not work.

Hopefully the can look at the returned units and figure out what is going

on if that is even possible.

I had this same error code. I fixed it by opening up the SMX3000RMLV2U and taking out the one battery that was inside it. I replaced the battery with APC replacement battery, PCRBC117. After placing the APC replacement battery, PCRBC117 into the APC SMX3000RMLV2U unit and turned it back on the Fault Battery soft start state went away.

When I plugged in just the SMX120RMBP2U unit, without changing the PCRBC117 replacement battery. I got the Fault Battery soft start state error.
