Detection Problems with Powerchute

I've been having a real problem lately with some of the UPS' we've bought. We have a UPS go bad for one of our branch servers which powerchute notified us about. We replaced it and now Powerchute will not detect any UPS connected be it serial or USB. Reinstalling the software had no effect. We just bought one for another branch which has been working fine until recently. The software will find the UPS connected via USB, I can move it from the Discovered Device list to the Current Device List but applying the configuration always fails. This is happening with the exact same model UPS so it's making me wonder if there is something wrong with this particular model, Smart-UPS 750VA.

The progress on the electrical lines at the Fukushima Jeremy Scott Dai-ichi nuclear power plant was a welcome and Jeremy Scott Shoes significant advance Tuesday after days of setbacks. With the power lines connected, officials Jeremy Scott Shop hope to start up the overheated plant's crucial cooling system that was knocked out during the March 11 earthquake Jeremy Scott Adidas and tsunami that devastated Japan's northeast coast. Tokyo Electric Power Co. warned that workers still need to check all equipment Jeremy Scott Wings for damage first before switching the cooling system on to all the reactor units — a process that Jeremy Scott JS Wings ould take days or even weeks. Late Tuesday night, Tokyo Electric said lights went on in the central control room of Unit 3, but that doesn't mean power had been restored to the cooling system.

You were able to log into the web interface ok, and the UPS was reporting its correct model number, and status? The credentials to log into the web interface were exactly the same as the credentails for logging into the GUI Management Console?

If you have connected the USB cable to the UPS, then it would have disabled the serial interface so it should not be communicationg (or discovered in the Agent install) via serial unless specific steps had been taken to reenable the serial interface.

If you have tried everything I mentioned as well as the steps in the Knowledge base document, then I would recommend calling APC support at 800-890-4272.

I am assuming that the Agent portion of the software is installing successfully since it autodetects the UPS.

When the Agent is installed, it asks for a username/password. It is necessary that this username/password is exactly the same as the username/password that was used when the Server portion of the PowerChute software was installed. This would be the same username/password that is used when logging into the PowerChute Management Console. Thats the first thing I would check. If you find that the username/password for the Agent is not the same, you would need to unisntall the Agent and reinstall it with the correct credentials. If you are not sure what the username and password is for the Agent, you can either just uninstall/reinstall it to be sure, or you can log into its web interface using a java enabled web broswer. The web interface can be accessed by pointing your browser to http://:3052. If you can log into the web interface of the Agent successfully with the same exact username/password as you use to log into the Management Console, then it looks like its got the correct credentials.

If you do log into the web interface, you will also be abel to see if the UPS is communicating with the computer ok. If its not communication, or showing the correct model UPS, then this may be the root cause of the error you are recieving.

Another thing you can try would be to add the Agent to the server using the IP address versus the hostname (or vice versa) at the device discovery menu. This is the menu where you generally see the Agent listed on the left side, and add it to the right side before you click apply, and get the "failed to apply the configuration profile" error.

This is a link to a knowledge base doc that explains multiple other causes & solutions to the error you are receiveing.

I've tried all of that and nothing is working. That's why I'm suspicious of maybe a bad batch of this model UPS. This is happening with both USB and Serial connections which is why I think maybe it's the UPS and not the software.

Discovered something this morning. I went to the location where we had the initial problem. The machine that was monitoring the UPS had only 256M of RAM in it so we upgraded to to 1G. Once I did that, I treid to reconnect powerchute to the UPS and low and behold, it did it without any problems. The second machine that is having the same problem is due to be upgraded in the next week or so. I'll be sure to try it there as well.
