Connecting Serial Cable UPS shutting down

Ok, just want to make sure I am not crazy here.

I plugged a serial cable on the back of a Smart-UPS 1400 to use to communicate with some software on a laptop in one of my racks.

When I plug the DB9 serial cable into the port on the UPS, the UPS completely shuts down and turns off.

I have to reset it and turn it back on.

Why would this happen and is this normal?

You'll need to buy an APC 940-0024 or its generic equivalent.

If you're using the UPS configuration in Windows XP's UPS tab in Power settings, be sure you select "Smart UPS" / Smart protocol. If you use anything else and hit "apply" without the UPS being connected properly or with nothing connected, it will cause the computer to shut down and you have to go into safe-mode to fix it.

There are two cables that you can use.

940-0024C which is about 6 feet

or

AP9804 which is 15 feet

If you get the 0024C and it's not long enough, you can extend it with a standard back-to-back serial extender.
