Bricked SRT6KRMXLT?
I upgraded the firmware on my SRT6KRMXLT and now my UPS will not power on. I just get a red panel alarm, Comm Event: to power off press and hold power button.
- I am able to get into the NMC via URL, SSH, FTP, and serial so it is not totally bricked.
- The web page shows the new firmware, so I believe the upgrade process worked.
- I FTP'ed an older version of the firmware but when I try to run the UPSFWUPDATE command it responds that the UPS must be turned off. If I try the UPS -c Off command it just fails.
- UPS Status says State: Main input bad., Bypass Out of Range, Discharged, Internal Communication Fault
- Tried the Brain Dead reset several times, no change.
So I am trying to determine if there is a way to trick the UPS to thinking it is turned off so I can manually run the downgrade. Appreciate any help I can get to avoid having to buy a new UPS.
Thanks

Yeah, I saw that post. Their problem sounded like the NMC was bricked. I can get to the NMC fine and upload current and old firmwares. But on mine when you upload it you have to issue the firmware update command to actually install it, at least that is what I find in documentation. Maybe I am missing something.
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,
In that thread I call out the specific steps that must be in place and done. Specifically the firmware must be done directly using the RS-232 -> RJ50 Serial cable.
The options are to try the FUW first and see the results. If that fails the break fix is attaching the USB cable at the same time.
The last method is using X-Modem and follow the APC Technical Manual.

Teken,
Thank you for your responses! So I did get further when I read the post more closely. I realized the console port on the back of the UPS was for the NMC. It was a little confusing because the NMC is built into the UPS and not a seperate slide out card. So I noticed someone mentioned using the 940-0625A cable, which I had. I plugged that into the RJ45 Serial port and tried TeraTerm with XModem send file and it looked like it was sending it, but after it completed, nothing happened. I tried powering everything down and back up hoping it would boot off the firmware file that transferred... no luck. So then I thought about using the Firmware Update Utility. It successfully connected and told me what firmware was on the UPS, so I know it is not completely bricked. I continued on with the utility and it got to the transfer step and failed with the following message:
The UPS cannot undergo a firmware upgrade as it is in one of the following modes:
- On battery (not)
- Shutdown Pending
- Runtime calibration
- Seft-Test
- Battery disconnected (not)
I tried with the USB cable plugged in and out. It even sent the file with the USB as well as the serial. So I am stumped as it appears that it is not completely bricked... but it does not want to be a UPS anymore.
Again, I appreciate your help and wondering if you have any other ideas?
Thanks

Hi Steve,
I would ask you to confirm if the LCD Menu is still available and operational for user input.
Depending upon what firmware was on board prior there may be an option to select firmware upgrade.
https://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/FAQ000258266/
If that option is not present log back into the NMC. Go to the firmware update tab and see if the option to continue / upload a firmware file is available.
If so obviously select continue or upload the specific file that was called out by the FUW loader.
Lastly, using X-Modem is the last resort via direct connection to the UPS (NOT) through the NMC.
NOTE: If this hardware is still under APC Warranty please engage them for support. Especially if it’s in warranty and they could RMA this bricked unit.
Please do let me know how it all turns out good / bad. 👍

Steve,
This is also an option but is completely out of band. But, this is a proven solution to recover a unit (IF) you have the correct firmware revision.
Please keep in mind the process is exactly the same but the firmware applies to a different unit entirely!
Just a h^ll merry pass option to consider:

Hi Teken,
The LCD screen is functional, but very limited on what I can do. It is like the NMC cannot communicate with the UPS. It can detect the firmware version and shows that I did the upgrade, but it won't control anything on the UPS. This is what the NMC web page shows on the update screen.
All of the outlet groups are off...
So based on what you are asking I should see the UPS recognize that there is a new firmware file waiting to be installed, but it does not appear to be. I have not had luck with the XModem transfer option via TeraTerm, but if I use the generic send file (in teraterm) it does look like it is sending it. I have tried it with both the binary option checked and unchecked.
I am losing hope that I will be able to revive it. I have a new UPS arriving today but was hoping I could hail mary it and save it before I cut the box open. 🙂 Wishful thinking.
Thanks for your help!
-Steve

Hi Steve,
The image capture shows a Choose File option. Please take the file from the FUW and try to load it via the NMC.
You may try this with the USB cable attached and without while the system connects via Ethernet.
Let me know the results good / bad. 👍

Hello.
I have exactly the same situation! The same model APC SRT6KRMXLI. The firmware was version 04.0, updated over the network through web settings to 15.3.
How can I restore the device's functionality?
