APC UPS 200XL

Good day peeps,
Please I have this APC 200XL unit that blows up any moshet installed in it. The original mosphet that came with the unit is irf3710 but I've tried all the equivalents non seems to work but keeps blowing up.
Can anyone help on how to stop this unit from blowing up mosphets.

Ragards.

If it repeatedly blows mosfets then you have a bigger issue. I had an SU2200 that smoked its mosfets because the drivers had died. Mosfets rarely die, they are often killed. Look at the driver a bit closer.

It depends. If your unit is an SU2200XL then the drivers are discrete totem pair transistors. If it's an SUA2200XL then the driver is a monolithic MOSFET driver IC.

The 2200 has an issue where it cooks a resistor in the high side driver on each side. When that gets really bad then you'll latch the high side driver on which will cook the driver transistors and smoke the MOSFETs.

I've not seen this happen on an SUA model yet.

See if your board looks anything like this one. The two boxed brown resistors on the left of the picture are the ones in the MOSFET highside driver (R38 & R40).

Thank you very much man!

I just noticed that the transistors are wounded but were reading normal on the panel. More so, is there possibility of the ICs (APC2020B, CD40106BCN and APC2010) going bad, if yes what's the equivalent I can use to replace them as getting those is not easy?

Thumbs up for you man!

I'm sure it's possible. I've never seen it happen though. If they were bad you could find replacements in pretty much any SU series Smart-UPS. They are the same asics through the range. The CPUs are also. They store the model specific parameters in an external serial eeprom.

I have an old SU700 he that has the same CPU and asics as a similarly aged SU2200.

Ok thanks. I'll have those transistors replaced along side with all the mosphets and get back to you on the results thank you very much.

More so, am having an issue with one of my SU3000NET that am using as an inverter with (48V) 200AH batteries. Suddenly, All the relays are multi clicking continuously with all the lights blinking in accordance with the relays. Do you have any idea on what's causing that and how to remedy it?

Hello Mr Brad,

Thanks to you for your advice on what to do. I've replaced the bad components (transistors, diodes and resistors) on the board including the mosphets. It has finally accepted the new mosphets without blowing or burning them, but its making a sharp whining noise when on test mode before i power it up, tripping off with overload led on when powered on and long beep even when there's no load on it.

What do you think can cause that and what should I do?

Thanks once more.

Lots of potential causes. If you have an Oscilloscope it'd be worth looking at the MOSFET gate waveforms to make sure they are all behaving and you got the driver repair right. It would also be worth hooking up a serial console to make sure the UPS still knows what it is.

I had an SU1400RMI2U lose its mind and thought it was a 110V 700VA unit. That caused all sorts of issues until I got it reprogrammed.

Remote diagnostic is never easy unfortunately. Do you have access to a scope?

The other thing worth trying is using a bit of plastic tube as a stethoscope. Put one end in your ear and run the other end around the UPS trying to pinpoint the source of the whining noise. That might give you more of an idea.
