Hi Guys,
Our Datacenter currently has a power equal to 20kVA are distributed into four racks, each of which consume power equal to 3kVA.
We are planning to buy a APC Smart-UPS RT 20kVA in a special designation for a one new rack. This rack will contain mission critical servers for our company with the power consumption of 3kVA.
Then the total power consumption of our datacenter is 5x3kVA = 15kVA
My question is: Do we need to add more power equal to 20kVA for this APC Smart-UPS RT 20kVA ?
Thank You ๐

Hi All,
Thank you very much for your support, especially i picKed a winna. Now the UPS already up and works fine.
We use a 32A MCB for the connection from the electrical panel to the Server Rack.
APC is really plug n play UPS.

no, you do not need to run the UPS at 100%. you just need to size the breaker according to the manual to account for temporary overloads, inrush current, or other foreseen circumstances that could cause the UPS to draw more than 15kVA.

Hi i picKed a winna, thank you very much for the reply.
This UPS will only serve the New Rack which has a maximum load of 3kVA. ( see my atttachment )
My concern is I need to provide a 20kVA sub-breaker for this UPS, while the capacity of our main breaker is 20kVA. Can I use a sub breaker with a capacity of 6kVA for this UPS? ๐
Thank You again

hi
yes, technically its possible but you just need to make sure that it will meet any local or national code you need to adhere to. i don't think it does so if the UPS would get overloaded or anything, it could trip your upstream 3k breaker since the UPS is capable of more power. logically though, it would make sense and be ok - just check for any codes you might violate while doing it.
