APC ShareUPS - Smart Cables

Hey all,

I have a SmartUPS 1400 that is connected to the 8 port Share Ups. My cable from the Smart Ups is a Smart Cable 940-0024. I also have 5 other of the 940-0024 Smart Cables. We recently moved and my other servers that are connected through ports 2-6 on the Share Ups report faults when using the Smart Cable.

I was pretty certain I used all Smart Cables for all servers before the move as I could not find any basic cables packed away anywhere.

I was on the phone with Tech Support for awhile and they thought that I could use either a Smart or Basic cable but were not able to resolve my issue.

My configuration is all Windows 2003 Server and 1 Windows 2000 Server. I am using the PowerChute Business Edition Version 7, the server/agent/console on my Server that is on port 1. The rest of them just have the PowerChute Business Edition version 7 Agent on them and they are set for "ShareUps" I tried switching them between "Smart and Basic" as well.

They all report running on battery and threshold time on battery exceeded.

Any ideas, do I in fact need to get 5 of the 940-0020 Basic cables? They are pretty expensive so I don't want to buy them if I don't need them.

Thanks in advance.

Bryan

Ok Thanks! I didn't know about these network cards, do they do the same thing basically as the Share Ups?

With a network card in the UPS, you can install PowerChute Network Shutdown (for free) on each server and have them all shutdown gracefully when you want them to (for a number of different scenarios). The network cards have a lot more functionality than PCBE does, especially since most of your connections on the Share-UPS are simple signaling - you can have a look at the interfaces of the different cards and see the features for yourself here (check out the top 2): http://testdrive.apc.com/card.htm

And you don't need to worry about a bunch of serial cables all over the place!
