APC Backups Pro 1000 Failed?

I have a server that was connected to an APC Backups Pro 1000. Last week a power surge during a storm "fried" my business server. At examination nothing appears wrong with the APC unit. Does anyone have any suggestion as to how this occured and and how avoid this in the future. Thanks for your help!
