Hi,
I am trying to salvage an SMX3000HV by attempting to flash it using a serial cable. The serial cable I have is an APC AP9827 and when connected to a Windows 10 machine, it doesn't detect as a COM port in 'Device Manager' and as such the APC Firmware utility is unable to find my UPS.
Are there any tips for using an APC AP9827 cable on Windows 10 (Pro 22H2)?
Can the Xmodem recovery procedure be accomplished using Linux and Minicom?
Really out of ideas, please help,
Thank you,
Vincent

Hi Vincent,
Hope the information below will help you in some way and provide insight as to what you need.
The APC (Proprietary) Serial cable is part number 940-0625A. This is a RS-232 (Serial) to RJ50 Ethernet plug. The RS-232 is connected to the computer side and the RJ50 directly to the back of the UPS (RJ50) Serial Port.
You may use a USB to Serial adapter with the appropriate drivers if your system doesn’t have a serial port. You may also make your own cable if so equipped.
USB Cable: Any generic USB (Data) cable can be used to connect from the UPS to the computer. Only some UPS (Firmware Enabled) systems support upgrades via USB. The APC FAQ as it relates to which firmware supports USB upgrades is listed in the firmware matrix.
NMC: The part number for the RS-232 to 2.5 mm barrel jack is: 940-0299A. This is NOT the recommended method to update the UPS firmware. Unless all requirements have been met and present.
NMC LAN: The NMC has the option to upgrade the UPS firmware. This is NOT the recommended method either even though it’s an option. The APC FAQ calls out all the requirements when using this specific method to upgrade the firmware.

Hi Teken,
I no longer have a windows machine with a DB9 serial port. Only one of my Poweredges has one but it's running Linux (RHEL).
So basically what you are saying is that APC does not have a USB to Serial cable for their proprietary serial connector?
I bought on amazon a 'StarTech.com Cable USB vers ASI de 1,8 m AP9827' which I thought would help but no serial port was ever detected by either Windows 10 or Linux (Fedora).
So my only solution would be to:
1) source the 940-0625A APC cable.
2) source a compatible DB2 to USB Serial cable (any recommendations?). I've used StarTech.com USB to Serial Adapter with FTDI USB to DB9 in the past with good success.
At 6ft (APC cable) + another 6ft (StarTech USB to Serial), wouldn't this make the cable too long for an RS232 signal to the UPS?
I no longer have many windows machines and none of them have a DB9 serial port. I'd really like to salvage my UPS or try to recover it using the XModem on Serial procedure, if possible.
I am unsure about what cables/parts to buy.
Why wouldn't this official APC cable work? Any ideas?

I'm 100% lost now..
