I installed a AP9606 into a SU700RM2U and it will not recognize the UPS. After I upgraded the firmware on the AP9606 (to 326b via APC Managment Card Wizard v 2.0.1) I am no longer able to establish standard communications through HyperTerminal via Smart cable. (settings 2400 baud, 8 bit, no parity, 1 stop bit, no flow control). If I remove the AP9606 and connect with HyperTerminal and hit ENTER I recieve NA (I belive this to be Smart Mode?). I have restarted the UPS several times to include a power down and disconect batteries, but still recieve same pompt when connecting to HyperTerminal. If the AP9606 is removed I am able to see the Model of UPS in Power Chute Plus. If I shut the UPS down and install the AP9606 I am unable to see the Model of UPS in Power Chute Plus. During this process I have installed and removed Power Chute Business Edition 7.0.5 (will not connect to UPS), Power Chute Plus (will talk to UPS only if AP9606 is not installed), Power Chute Network Shutdown.
Questions:
1. How to return to standard communication mode in HyperTerminal?
2. How get AP9606 to recognize UPS model?
Any and all help will be appreciated as I am about to go bald from this.
Thank you,
Dennis

This came up 3rd in my search in Google so I wanted to let others having problems updating their Web/SNMP. I found out updating the aos***.bin works using FTP according to the [Official Guide|http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/768] but updating the sumx***.bin wouldn't. It kept failing to properly upload no matter which version mix and match I did. It did however work using TFTP. After you update the aos according to their guide I just telnet to it then went to 3 for system, then 4 for file transfer, then 3 for TFTP and it asks for the server and file name. I just used tftpd32.exe which is an easy standalone program you can Google. You can also refer to [this thread 3rd post|http://forums.apc.com/spaces/18/server-room-data-center-design-best-practices/forums/general/5791/th...] for the file downloads.

Kevin,
The cable I have is a 940-1524c. From what I have been told the only difference is the length. Is this correct? I have a spare AP9605 do you think I could try that to test the UPS?
Thanks,
Dennis

Yes the 1524 is just a 15' cable of the 24 cable. If you have a different card I would try just to see if you can get a status LED on the card, but it would be easier to have another Smart-UPS on hand to test the SmartSlot in that.

Hello,
Please keep in mind that so long as the AP9606 is installed, you will not be able to use either PowerChute Plus or PowerChute Business Edition with the UPS. The accessory supercedes serial communication when installed. However, to reset the UPS and install the card properly, do the following:
1. Turn Load/UPS off.
2. Disconnect UPS from utiliy power
3. Depress TEST button for 4-6 seconds until you hear a click and the front LED's flash
4. Install card
5. Turn UPS/Load on.

Kevin,
Thanks for the quick response. I have already inserted the card in accordance with the manufacturers instructions (the same you listed in your reply). This will cause the card AP9606 to work but it still does not recognize the UPS type. The message on the web interface page is something to the extent "Searching for Smart-Ups or Matrix..." Once the card is removed and the RS-232 cable is installed Power Chute Plus will recognize the USP type as Smart-Ups 700.
Questions still out there?
1. How to get out of "Smart Mode?" in hyperterminal?
2. How to get AP9606 to recognize model of Smart-Ups?
Thanks again for the quick response,
Dennis

I am not sure I understand what you're trying to accomplish in Hyperterminal. There is no interface if the web card is not installed. All you can basically do is press shift+y and get an "SM" repsonse telling you, that with the 940-0024 cable, that it is communicating in smart mode.
As for the firmware, I would re-flash it and see what happens. It's possible that the application layer did not take during the first upload.

Kevin,
Thanks again. Ok, my total misunderstanding on the serial communications. I have that resolved and now understand. But as far as the AP9606 recognizing the SU700, this still has me perplexed.
What I have done:
Installed AP9606 I.A.W. APC instructions.
Flashed firmware downloaded from APCC.com, files aos311.bin and sumx310.bin via Web/SNMP Management Card Wizard v2.0.1. "File transfer complete" was reported.
Complete power down and restart.
Access the the AP9606 via the web interface and the UPS Status reports "Searching for a Smart-UPS or a Matrix-UPS..."

Flashed firmware downloaded from APCC.com, files aos326b.bin and sumx326.bin via Web/SNMP Management Card Wizard v2.0.1. "File transfer complete" was reported. Complete power down and restart.
Access the the AP9606 via the web interface and the UPS Status reports "Searching for a Smart-UPS or a Matrix-UPS..."
All 3 firmware versions had the same result.
I have loaded PowerChute Business Edition 7.0.5 server and console on machine #1 (winxp sp2) and machine #2 (winxp sp2) which is connected to the SU700 via RS232, has Windows Agent loaded.
While loading Windows Agent on the machine #2 it was unable to identify UPS type and manually configured the serial cable to com1 and make Smart-Ups.
While using Console on Machine #1 to connect to machine #2 I received the following message in the Device List Configuration window: "Failed to apply the configuration to Machine #2"
It seems if I am unable to get the AP9606 to recognize the SU700 then I will not be able to utilize PowerChute Business Edition.
Once again your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Dennis

Dennis,
I understand your comparison now of the 9606 and PCCBE. If the 9606 cannot find the Smart-UPS on three different firmware revisions, and cannot auto-detect, then there may be a problem with the communication on the UPS overall. If that brain-dead procedure has been done numerous times over and still ending up at this, I would definitely lean on that. You are using the 940-0024 cable just to verify correct?

Hello,
I just purchased an apc22003U which came with an AP9606 network card. I just tried to connect it to my network and see no connectivity lights at all. Either at the back of the card or at my network switch. I am running Win 2003 SBS and tried to run PowerChute Network Shutdown 2.2.3 (Pcns223win.zip) I am fine until I get to the part it asks me for the Management Card IP address. I was looking through some threads and noticed that you had advised another person to
1. Turn Load/UPS off
2. Disconnect UPS from utility power
3. Depress TEST button for 4-6 seconds until you hear a click and the front LED's flash
4. Install Card
5. Turn UPS/Load on
Then I read another place where you said Shift-y.
Am I thinking correctly that the above mentioned will also work for me?
Also shouldn't I be seeing at least a link light at the card when connected to my switch?
Thanks,
Tony

You won't be seeing a link if there's no status. Definitely do steps 1-5. However, if you put the card in hot, there's a chance that either a) the card didn't work to begin with, or b) you fried the card by installing it on the fly. Only UPS's with a bypass circuit can isolate power away from the Smart-Slot and stop the end result of frying cards.
The Shift+Y procedure is just to ensure with, or without the card installed, you can connect to Hyperterminal, and receive an "SM" response ensuring that the SmartSlot is communicating properly.
