Hi. I'm trying to upgrade firmware on my AP7920. I haven't serial console cable. My question is: if I upgrade firmware using Utility by APC that I found here
http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=ap7920&tab=software
after upgrade I will need serial cable to reconfigure network or It will preserve network configuration?
And on that site I've downloaded APC Rack Power Distribution Unit Generation 1 (AP7xxx Series) Firmware Revision 3.7.4 SFRPDU374 but in the release notes
http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/JKUR-7NXU6D_R3_EN.pdf
there isn't AP7920 listed.
Thanks in advance,
Claudio

Thanks for reply. It is blinking slowly. I can't setup option 43 on DHCP and I havent' serial cable. Is there any way to set it up via telnet or ftp ? Or should I set manual ip configuration?

Hi. Thanks for reply 🙂
I did the upgrade.
It encountered 1 error. Pic attached.
Iplist.txt has this
;SystemIP=168.192.0.1
;SystemUserName=username
;SystemPassword=password
I'm trying to log in using old ip address but It doesn't work.
It says:
Error: The application was not able to load.
You are attempting to access an APC device.
There was a problem loading the application. Please login to the device via telnet for more details.
Any ideas? 🙂

anytime you upgrade firmware, it will not affect any configuration unless otherwise noted with a warning (generally its only if you do a major downgrade on certain applications). we've never had that case on a Rack PDU.
SFRPDU374 will work fine on your PDU. you don't need the serial cable to perform the update.
instructions on all of the available methods to upgrade firmware are in the knowledge base -> http://www.apc.com/site/support/index.cfm/faq/ -> search for FA156047
the easiest method if the PDU is set up on the network would be to just run the .exe file and follow the prompts after you download SFRPDU374.
hope that helps.

iplist.txt is only a file used when you update multiple devices so don't worry about that. the wizard you used can use the iplist.txt file to read upgrade the multiple cards at once.
anyway. what i suggest is going to that kbase i mentioned and redoing the upgrade using the manual FTP instructions and it should be fine. you'll have to FTP the AOS file 3.7.4 over to the PDU, log out, let the PDU reboot and then repeat with the rpdu 3.7.4 file log out and let it reboot and it should be fine.

Yes eheh. Everything works very well. I have last question 😞
I live in Italy, in the setting I've found this:
Line-to-Line Voltage: 208 Volts
Power Factor: 1.000
I live in Italy and here voltage is 230 (at least I think).
Should I change this value?
Thanks again for your help.

yes - this is something new in this firmware because the PDU cant actually measure voltage. this could only be previously changed via SNMP.
change that value to your nominal input voltage (yes, most likely 230). you can also change the power factor which relates to your equipment attached and is used for power calculations in conjunction with the line to line voltage value (again since these PDUs cannot actually measure/calculate it on its own).

I'm sorry to bother you with another question... 😞
But now my login on http is very very very slow... like 1 minute and 20 seconds to logon (I press logon and I wait ...). any idea about it?
Thanks again,
Claudio

so are you using HTTP versus HTTPS? I know you said http but I wanted to verify that you just didnt say that and its https.Do other pages load slowly? Are you using RADIUS?

Yes. I'm using http now. But I tried both, http and https. It needs 1 minutes and 20 seconds to logon on both. And no, other pages load correctly. This slow load happens only on logon. I'm not using RADIUS. I've tried to logon with 2 laptop (mozilla, explorer and chrome on both) and iPad. All of them need that time to logon.
Thanks again,
Claudio

well i know for sure due to the older hardware, HTTPS does not load quickly on there. same if you're using SSH or any other secure thing like SNMPv3.
if its only at log in, i'd probably do a reboot on the management interface but i know that already occured when you did a firmware update. might be worth another try. you also could back up your configuration file and try a reset to defaults to see if there is any change before you re-apply your configuration file.
before that, i might also consider a direct connection to the PDU for testing purposes to rule out any network issues i.e. access via a proxy server or something.

I've done a reset to defaults and now logon works very well. I've configured it again manually (same configuration) and still works well. I don't know what happened but thanks for help 🙂

I disconnected my pdu and when I turned it on It can't take ip (I think). Status led of ethernet port pass from yellow to green all the time. It is configured by DHCP.
Thanks again and again

is it flashing slowly or rapidly? slowly going green and orange is DHCP. rapidly indicates it is booting.
these PDUs require DHCP option 43 to be enabled by default in order to accept a DHCP address. do you have that set up on your DHCP server? if not, you can connect to the PDU via serial and disable it from being required or else we'll need to find a different method. if you can set it up on your DHCP server, we have what it needs to be set to listed in the configuration options knowledge base. all of the configuration options for this device (which uses an NMC1) are outlined in FA156064 in the knowledge base @ http://www.apc.com/site/support/index.cfm/faq/
