Hi,
We have an SU2200XL Tower UPS with a few servers attached to it. It appears the battery recently went out and needs to be replaced, but while we're waiting for that to happen, we're noticing that power is getting cut to the servers 2-3 times every day and it's getting critical. My hypothesis is that the power in the area isn't the greatest and there are surges or brown-outs. However, I would think the UPS should still condition the power (boost and trim) even if the battery needs replacing. Is that so? What else can I check to see if the UPS has problems or not?
Thanks,
Cameron

Thanks clarkson. Things just got scarier. We hunted down a serial cable (no net mgmt card) and connected one end to the UPS and as soon as the other cable end touched the serial port on a server, everything immediately powered off and the UPS no longer powers on at all (even with things unplugged). That almost sounds like a grounding issue or some nasty problem with the UPS itself.
Anyone ever seen something like that?
Many thanks in advance,
Cameron

@clarkson,
Thanks again. I did not know there was a special pin-out, though the thought crossed my mind afterward. We used a straight-through serial cable. Do you know if using the wrong pin-out could kill the UPS? I certainly wouldn't think so, but even with the cable removed, it won't power on now.

Well, after the last series of events, another person I'm working with on this concluded the UPS was faulty and as it's no longer under warranty, is looking into getting a new UPS. I'm interested in trying to find out if the UPS really is damaged or not.
