InsideControl App

Has something changed on the way InsideControl app is configured on an Android device? Even after loading the InsideControl.knx config file to   ..../Internal shared storage/InSideControl/ directory on my MI A3 phone, I can't get the app to switch out of the demo mode. It used to work before. I know this app is being deemphasized now; but we do have several legacy customers whom we need to support. Any hint that helps to get this to work will be greatly appreciated.

I have seen the issue before, solution was to open the project file in the builder, change nothing and just save as new project file.

Use the new file on the mobile device.

Although the output file seems exactly the same it solved the issue..

Thanks Erwin. It did not work though. But it looks like something similar to what you said is causing it. I read in the .shb file in the Builder again and made some trivial changes, saved it and exported the .knx file which was subsequently ported to the directory on the phone. Reinstalled the InsideControl app on the phone and restarted. But the demo mode simply won't go!

We just recently launched an update of the Android app around Christmas. Is the app that is causing you the issue is the latest version? was it working with the previous one.

It is the latest version in the Play Store - Version 3.0.2 Build 3003.

The directory where I keep the .knx file is   /storage/emulated/0/InSideControl 

Not sure if the exact location or any typo in name would matter.

It would have been nice if the app had a menu to load config file from any directory.

Not sure as i never used Android but only iOS, but according to the manual you need to place the file in another location..

I needs to be "Internal storage/InSideControl/xxx.knx" where xxx should be your filename, reboot the app and it should pick it up when demo mode slider is disabled. (see attachment)

It is the same thing. Internal Storage (or storage or sdcard) is just a link to the actual location at emulated/0/...   This is confusing no doubt, but is an artefact of the legacy storage structure evolution.

Can you provide a version of Inside Builder you have used? A assume 2.0.10 from 2014 as the latest on SE.com.

Let me check with a developer your case. Maybe there is incompatibility of your knx file created in older version of builder 2.0.10 and last release App on Google play.

To check things, I created a brand new but small test case again and loaded on the phone. The result is the same - doesn't work..

Android 11

I tried to use this test file ( test.knx ) without any modifications on android 8 and it works there.
then tested it on android 11 + 12 and it does not.

I did another test:

1) clear all data + cache 
2) uninstall the app
3) delete the InSideControl folder 

4) install the app

5) start the app and allow permission for the storage 

6) check if the folder exists

android 11+12 -> folder was not created.
android 8 -> folder was created and app is able to load knx file.

so it looks like some issue with the latest android versions..

I also checked the logs via ADB and I have not seen there anything obvious.

That sounds right. I could get it to work on Android 9.  But on Android 11, it neither creates the directory nor recognizes the one which is already created. In view of the current Schneider priorities with respect to InsideControl HW and SW, I wonder whether this problem would ever get fixed. We can warn the new customers; but we have several legacy customers already using the app. They would certainly want to upgrade to Android 11 or higher.

Lose from the fact if there might (or not) be a fix for the current app, the product is already end of service by 11-2021 so i would actively approach the customers that uses InsideControl where you have sight on, to warn them that the product is discontinued and offer them for example Wiser for KNX that also brings a lot more added value, 

This would help catching surprised customers and at the same time bring you some extra business 😉

We have got  confirmation that it is related to change of permissions management in the newer Android 11 and 12 versions. A developer has been asked to deliver fixed version next week which will be after internal testing (1day) published on google play.

Hi, 

let me just inform you we have got a fixed App. Next step is to test it, modify a bit user guide and release.

This is description of the fix we agreed on:

• Android10- :no change
• Android11+ : reimport of KNX file needed. This can be done via email attachment where user just click and select Inside Control App. Inside Control App manage to save knx file to right place internal/private folder. No need to select folder in structure.
• When upgrading from Android 10 to 11, reimport needed as described in Android 11+. 

Additionally we add to fixed version of the App notification about reimport needed (only once before knx file is not copied on right place). See:

User guide will be updated and published accordingly before App release.

• Inside Control is faced out and apps are not supported and or available anymore, as alternatives we have 2 controllers Wiser for KNX (LSS100100) or spaceLYnk (LSS100200)
