As we continue integrating Copilot into our workflows, it's important to recognize not just the speed and convenience it offers, but also the opportunity it gives us to stay intellectually engaged. While Copilot can generate responses in seconds, we should consider taking a moment to analyze at least one of its outputs in depth not only to understand the reasoning behind the response, but also to confirm its accuracy, since, like any tool, Copilot can occasionally generate incorrect or misleading information.
This practice helps us stay sharp. Much like using a calculator where anyone can press the buttons, but understanding the logic behind the numbers is what truly matters we should aim to keep our analytical thinking active. Copilot is an excellent tool, but the quality of its output still depends on the quality of our input. By reflecting on the key points it highlights, we not only validate the response but also reinforce our own critical thinking skills.
How?
To make this practice tangible, we could create a simple internal site or platform where team members can take short, interactive quizzes. For example:
Prompt: “Write a summary of this contract clause.”
Copilot’s Response: A generated summary.
Quiz Question: “What do you think was the key part of the prompt that led to this result?”
Follow-up: “Would you trust this summary as-is? Why or why not?”
This kind of exercise encourages:
Prompt analysis Critical review of AI-generated content Discussion of accuracy and reasoning Reinforcement of domain knowledge
The Goal
The goal isn’t to resist progress or suggest that Copilot will make us less capable quite the opposite. It’s about using it wisely, as a partner in thought, while continuing to practice the habits that have always made us effective problem-solvers. We know AI can learn from us so why shouldn't we learn from it?
