After playing with Ncat for a while I decided there must be an easier way. I don't mind a bit of challenge but often I just want something dead-simple. Turns out I'd missed something in Hyperterminal all these years!

1) Run Hyperterminal on computers at both ends of the link.
2) Select "TCP/IP (Winsock)" for the Connect Using parameter.
3) On each computer, enter the IP address of the OTHER computer for the Host Address value.
4) Enter any valid Port number. I used port 30012. It must be the same in both computers.
5) On one computer, go to the Call menu and select "Wait for a call"
6) The other computer should have started trying to connect right away, and may connect as soon as the step above is done. If it times out first, restart the connection by going to the Call menu and selecting Call
7) You should see "Connected" appear in the lower left of the Hyperterminal window for each computer. Type something on one machine. It should appear on the other. You can respond from the second machine.

A Pro version of Hyperterminal can be purchased, but it's so old that hardly seems right. You can simply copy the required files off an older computer, eg a WinXP or previous machine. Or use the version in the attached zip file.
