E Series Packet Layer Configuration

Hi,

I am hoping to get the assistance of some more experienced radio users with some queries.

I have inherited a large fleet of Trios across multiple networks that I am trying to better understand. Most sites are point-to-multipoint DNP3, but some have a single repeater in between. The packet layer config is set to Standard for all sites, except for in networks that have a repeater, where it is set to Modbus. What is the reason for this, and can it be changed?

Also, I noticed that there is a DNP3 packet option as well. When would that be necessary?

Thanks,

Niro

I see you're in Australia, home of the Trio engineers! You may want to interface directly with them. You can go to this page on our website to send them a note:

Hi Niro,

My name is Luke and I am the global offer manager for Trio, but located in Melbourne. In E-Series Radios, Standard packet layer breaks up the RTU or PLC data in 20 byte packets, to minimise latency. The downside is that under some circumstances, packet interleaving can occur between remote sites, corrupting the message. This is probably why it is set to MODBUS in the repeater system. MODBUS packet layer is not restricted to MODBUS protocols, but rather than breaking up the packets into 20 bytes for latency, it keeps the packet intact and transmits it when there has been no traffic for 3 character times (2.5ms@9600). DNP is the same as Standard, it was provided for users to more easily identify their protocol (DNP). I will drop you my contact number and we can discuss further.

Cheers

Luke
