Historically, when accurate time stamping was needed, substation protection and control schemes have employed daisy chained IRIG-B connections with sometimes additional 1PPS method (for
example for differential line protection).
The now commonly used Ethernet based station bus has provided a new route to pass standardized time synchronization packets. This paper details and explains the different methods as well as the
opportunities and limitations of each time
synchronization solution.
