Substation control

What's the best way to learn control panel design for substation operation? I've had access to control panel design drawings, but I'm having trouble interpreting them.

Hello @usiikei, thank you for your post!

Learning control panel design for substation operation can be a rewarding endeavor!

Here are some effective strategies to help you improve your skills and understanding:

  • Study the basics: familiarize yourself with the fundamental concepts of electrical engineering, control systems, and substation operations. Understanding key terminology and principles will help you interpret design drawings better.
  • Review design standards: look into industry standards and guidelines related to control panel design, such as IEC, IEEE, or local standards. These documents provide valuable insights into best practices.
  • Analyze existing drawings: since you have access to control panel design drawings, take the time to analyze them closely. Look for:
    • Symbols and legends: understand the symbols used in the drawings and what they represent.
    • Layout: study the layout of components, including relays, circuit breakers, and wiring.
    • Connections: pay attention to how components are connected and the flow of signals and power.
  • Hands-On practice: if possible, get practical experience by working on real control panel setups or simulations. Building or modifying a simple control panel can help solidify your understanding.
  • Online courses: consider enrolling in online courses or watching video tutorials focused on control panel design and substation operation. Websites like Coursera, Udemy, or specialized platforms may offer relevant courses.
  • Resources: look for books on electrical design, control systems, and substation operation. Some recommended titles might cover topics like relay logic, PLC programming, and control circuit design.
  • Mentorship: if possible, seek guidance from experienced engineers or mentors who have expertise in control panel design. They can provide insights, answer questions, and share valuable experiences.
  • Simulation Software: familiarize yourself with simulation software that can model control panel designs. This will help you visualize how different components interact and improve your design skills.

Hope it helps :) Have a great day!
