Machine Advisor: How to coerce Machine advisor to accept 16bit data modbus data via Teltonika gateway

We are  working on gathering telemetry data from a device which provides 16bit contiguous data chunks via modbus

MA appears to be (inappropriately) biased toward accepting 32bit data as the default

Surely it can be coerced into accepting 16bit native data given suitable incantations and arm wavery.
