Does the TM3DI16/G expansion module require a separate 24 V power supply? The catalogue says that it is not necessary ‘Power is supplied from the controller via the bus expansion connector’, then why does the Wiring Diagrams show a power supply unit? Why can't I short the signal directly between COM and Input?

The control unit of the IO Modul get the power via the bus expansion connector. The Digital In/Output need an additional connection to the power supply. This offers the possiblitie to use adifferent Power supply.

The module is powered by the bus expansion connector, but the COM terminal is to be connected to the opposite polarity of the input voltage. the DI circuit is an optocoupler which basically means the input activates a LED. the LED needs the circuit to be closed to activate the input.
below picture is from the internet illustrating how DI is activated not the actual circuit of the module. in our case, the module is Bi-Directional which means COM terminal can be connected to +24v or GND based on the input type (Source or Sink).
