What are the best solutions for achieving Energy Efficiency using existing asset data?

Does energy efficiency mean replacement of existing assets with new and more efficient assets? Is it not possible to have significant savings with existing assets without any huge cost of additional sensors for monitoring everywhere. We have various plants built across different timelines. Can some benchmark and then show us the possible savings in a simulation before we take a decision to go ahead?
