How to avoid EGX300 firmware upload failure

One of our SI has followed the instruction to upload the firmware and wait for EGX300 to reboot.

They wait for more than half hour and found that EGX300 is not responding at all.

After they remove the power and replug again, all the power and RS485 (green and orange) LEDs are always on.

And they cannot access EGX300 anymore.

What might possibly go wrong in the process? Anyway I get revive the dead EGX300?

Thanks

Did you try a full reset? I understand it's bad as you'll lose the configuration, but if you get to that desperation point...

Before you do that, can you still FTP to it? (when you say access, do you mean HTTP access or also FTP access?)

Hi Abon,

I am L4 Tech support for the EGX300.

Could you tell me more about what happened?  What firmware version was on the EGX300 prior to this upgrade attempt?  Which file was uploaded when this problem occurred?  (Was it a .bin file or a .upd file?) When the user says the EGX300 is not responding, how are they trying to communicate with the device?  (HTTP, FTP, ICMP?)

How long after removing the power then reapplying were the LEDs observed being "always on"?  Did you wait several, up to 10, minutes?

Thanks,

Randi

Firmware檔案來源來自下列網址(v4.370.zip)

http://www.powerlogic.com/downloaddetail.cfm/cs/1/csec/2/fk_cat_id/6/fk_subcat_id/18/fk_p_id/49/sub_...

This is the manual he referred to.

首先我是參考下列網址的使用手冊

http://www.schneider-electric.cn/documents/university-program/energy-efficiency-contest/IONE/EGX300-...

On page 43.

Things are smooth until step3 (Copying the binary file) . But he is a little bit confused where he should put the binary file. So he put the file in root directory and reboot. He waited for more than 10 mins. Communication LED is flicking but power is not (which contradicts what the manual decribed).

Then he tried to connect through HTTP and FTP but all failed. He disconnected the power and connect power. He also tried reset button (long press 10 seconds). All in vain, then he realized that he might kill the box.

其中的第43頁「Updating the Firmware File」

Thanks Abon for this information.

I think I see where the problem occurred.  Step 4.

In this step the file is "pasted" to the EGX300.  This file should be placed in the root directory

4322

Once the file is "pasted" here, the file transfer will begin.  At this point, the user should do nothing.  The EGX300 will store the file, and then reboot automatically.  If the user places the file here and then reboots manually during the transfer process, the EGX300 firmware will not be written and the device will no longer function (since there is no firmware).  In this case, you will see some activity on the Ethernet LEDs (if the device is connected to a network) but, the power LED will not wink, nor will you see the rapid blinking LED, indicating setup is available.

So, if the customer did indeed paste the file on the EGX300 and rebooted manually.  The device probably doesn't have any firmware on it and will have to be returned.

I hope this helps understanding the problem.

Randi

FYI: The current revision for EGX300 User Guide is 63230-319-216B4. This document was also recently translated to simplified Chinese, ref# 63230-319-234A2. Both were updated 06/2013.

These should be static links--if they don't work for you please let me know:

  • EGX300 User Guide (EN)
  • EGX300 User Guide (ZH)

The latest revisions are also available to download from the shopping kiosk, after each release: http://shoppingkiosk.schneider-electric.com/news.aspx.

Katie

Yes, the manual states not to remove power while updating firmware

4329

However, if the power is removed during the firmware update, the device will not respond to ping either.  So, maybe something else is going on with your EGX100.

Hi Randi,

So once we receive the device from the customer, how do we fix it? How do we put a firmware back on it? Using the RS232? Do you have some steps for us on how to do this?

Hi Laurent,

Unfortunately, the unit cannot be repaired by anyone except LaVergne.  We are the only ones with the tools to do this.
