Com'X com port 1 static address wants DNS?

Hello!!

Can anyone explain why, when one configures a static ip address to com port 1 on a Com'x, the config asks for a DNS address? It doesn't really make much sense.

Thanks!

Colton Peltier one has to enter the static IP adress of port 1 into 'Primary DNS server' for a static config on port 1.

Firstly, I tried entering the DF gateway address but couldn't connect, no ping back nada, ended up having to do a hard reset and start again.

On another note - I am accessing the ComX via port 1, I'm trying to change port 2 to a static address but it keeps changing back to 'DHCP server'. Any ideas? BTW - the pic I took was after I changed port 2 address/config, as you can see it says dhcp...

Thanks!

Hi Brahm,

The DNS server address is used by the ComX to resolve IP addresses from hostnames. For example, many customers may have internal hostnames (within their network) they would like to publish data to. In order to resolve the IP address of the hostname, the ComX needs to know which DNS server to contact.

Best Regards,

Colton

Hi Colton,

Thank you for your reply. I think perhaps you misunderstood the question - or - I did not phrase it properly...?

A Com'X is installed on a LAN and has been assigned a static IP address, default gateway and subnet mask. There are no other 'hostnames' on the network as the whole network has been set up for static routing, with port forwarding and NAT handled in the network switches. In this scenario, a DNS is not neccessary as there is no need to resolve a hostnme.

The question really then, I guess, is, what address does one put in the "Primary DNS server" address field if there is no DNS?

Thanks!

Hi Brahm,

Good point about it being a required field, with the possibility of it not being needed. The safest bet to enter here if it is not needed is the static IP of the ComX itself, or the configured gateway.

Best Regards!

Hi Colton,

Ok great it's not just me then haha!

Perhaps something that can be rectified in the next firmware release? Less cause for confusion and/or config errors!

Thanks.

Hi Brahm,

I can't see any screenshots you've attached can you please re-upload? Are you trying to configure both ports to be static IP addresses?

Best Regards,

Colton
