BSCM Modbus SL EPC discovery

Hi Xperts,

Need help!

Just want to know the correct steps on how to commission an NSX breaker with ML6 that has a BSCM Modbus/SL (LV434220) connected to a Modbus SL hub LV434224) via BSCM SL cord (LV434223) and connected to an IFE server (LV434002) via stacking connector TRV00217.

The trip unit is working however we cannot discover the breaker from the IFE Server. We set the rotary switch to position 0 so we can address them using EPC. Do you have a step by step procedure on how to correctly do this since we are trying to discover it using EPC but unfortunately cannot.

Thanks in advance,

Hello @jedzruiz1985 ,

Personnaly I am never using 0, I set the modbus Id using the switch.

If you connect to the modbus interface of the IFM using a RS485 converter it will work, we are doing it for other serial modbus devices.

Kind Regards

Hello @jedzruiz1985 ,

When you press the "Mode" button (5 sec) in the front face of your Micrologic 6.xE, what is the address "Adxx" displayed ?

Can you confirm you have no duplicate addresses on all your Micrologic 6.xE ?

I tested with a Panel Server + 2x Micrologic 5.2E and when BSCM is set to '0', the modbus ID displayed on the micrologic is "Ad99" for both Micrologic. So I suppose EPC or IFE detects duplicate Modbus ID and blocks the discovery process.

I'm not an expert with EPC, but it seems that the software cannot automatically attribute Modbus ID to the BSCM.

If you read the IS:

Romain_Polette_0-1759915154747.png

According to the User Manual:

Romain_Polette_1-1759915277540.png

=> you will need an USB to serial RJ45 adapter like TSXCUSB485 to communicate directly in serial with the Modbus Hub.

Workaround I tested: force the Modbus ID from the Micrologic trip unit front face:

  1. Press mode 5 sec (you will see the current Modbus ID)
  2. unlock the Micrologic (hope the trip unit is not sealed)
  3. set Modbus ID with up/down arrow
  4. Press OK button 2 times

You opened a tech support ticket, so I will let the EPC support answer.

Regards,

Hi Romain,

We are benchmarking it as well here on our end. Same solution ended up with yours. Need to change the addresses in the trip units first otherwise they will fight over id 99.

You can only change the ID using EPC. Still you need to set it on the trip unit first before it can even discover it. What we did not tried yet is if it is possible without the IFE server to discover the breaker from the modbus hub SL directly as per the publication. Otherwise the publication needs to be revised. It is misleading.

While you are at it... can you try combinations of using IFM with the new BSCM and IFM with old BSCM and one in a Modbus SL Hub with new bscm. Can you please bench test it if it will work properly?  Raised this just in case retrofits are required on site in the future.

Regards,

Jiedan

Hello @jedzruiz1985 ,

Please update your tech support ticket if our answers are OK for you.

"Otherwise the publication needs to be revised. It is misleading."

=> I Agree. This could be "annoying" when you installed many NSX with new BSCM with factory settings and want to set it up remotely with EPC.

"While you are at it... can you try combinations of using IFM with the new BSCM and IFM with old BSCM and one in a Modbus SL Hub with new bscm. Can you please bench test it if it will work properly?"

=> IFM + new BSCM: you need to use the ULP port of new BSCM connected to IFM ULP port. So you need to set the Modbus ID on the IFM front face (rotary switches). In this case, this is not possible to change the Modbus ID with EPC or with Micrologic screen.

=> IFM + old BSCM: same as above. Modbus ID must be set on IFM.

=> Modbus Hub + new BSCM : Only compatible with Modbus port of the new BSCM module. You can set the Modbus ID with rotary switch (limited to 13 IDs) or with Micrologic 5/6/7 screen when rotary switch is set to '0'. You can also use EPC as discussed above, but only to set up 1 breaker Modbus ID. Not possible to set up multiple NSX at the same time when BSCM is in factory config.

=> Modbus Hub + old BSCM : Forbidden 🙂

You can stack :

  • Modbus Hub + IFM + IFE .
  • Modbus Hub + IFM and then connect a Panel Server

Please read this interesting section of the updated ULP Guide:

Thanks a lot @Romain_Polette for the full explanation basically Old BSCM = only ULP and new BSCM ULP and Modbus.

Has anyone tried the new solution if it really works seamlessly if there are multiple SL hubs and breakers? I don't have the gears with me unfortunately to try it out. Hopefully you guys can simulate and confirm if the status indications "open, close and trip" are operating properly. Raising this since I have previously had a switchboard that has this when this setup was newly released and can't seem to get the correct status indications on the breakers so we had to revert back to the old architecture using the ifms and the old bscm which worked properly as expected.

Thanks
