work order network connections lost

Hi ,

In DCO 8.0.2 i need to move 2 network nexus 7000  from Rack1 in  DC1 to rack 12 in DC2

i wanted to do it in work order bat after i created the work order all the network connections on the source unit of nexus 7000 was deleted i did cancel the work order and still the nexus 7000 of the source  did not get the network connections back ,so because the DCO is in live DC so we did restore of the DB to point before the work order was created .

so now we gate the network connections back .

the questions is :

  1. way id it happened?
  2. is it a none issue in DCO 8.0.2?
  3. what is the way we can make work order for the units and do not lost the network connections!

Regards,

Yaniv Rozenbaum

Hi Yaniv,

Network/power cabling cannot be handled in Work order - and in general (for all DCo versions) by moving a server/device from one rack to another rack the possible network cabling may be cleared, so re-configuring may needed.

Kind regards

Hi Yaniv,

Unfortunately as I've mentioned, with or without work order if we move a server that has some network connections to another rack, then its network connections would be cleared (lost). So before making that move I would take a note of the existing network configuration so I can re-create after the move.  This the way software has been designed and works (for all versions). Actually in real data center usually we remove the cables (both power and network cables) before moving the server to another rack.

Kind regards

Hi Jef,
I really don't understand
one of the system's uses is to plan the future changes - in the computer room, which is used to preserve space in the cabinet for equipment that will come later from ather location.
That way every computer room seems to work in real life i think.
But what happens in the DCO is that when i did a future movemant to an equipment with a work order
The equipment cuts off all network connectivity on the exists unit as if the transition had already been made in practice, which did not happen in reality because it is a future activity (pland to the end of the year) .
Is there another way to use move unit in work order?

I found workaround I am copying existing equipment and renamingin it to mark it as something in the future in the target cabinet.
is the only option - i do it without a work order !

My client asks if we didn't use work orders for the planning of the changes we do in the data center so what the work order use for ?
from his point - If it is for only introduction for new equipment only ... it seems a little unnecessary ...

Kind regards,

yaniv

Yaniv

You are referring to movement of a device using work orders and network connections? In the below example my original server is in the left rack at U28 (circled below). That server has several network connections to a patch panel at the top of this rack.

I ran a test in my own demo environment. I moved the server circled below to the rack on the right side rack U23 (also circled below) and made a network connection from this new location to the patch panel at the top of the new rack.

I noticed when I created this planned task, the network connections on my original server (on the left) now appear to be removed when I use the network tool. Only the planned connections seem to exist when I use the network tool.

Is this what you're reporting?

Regards

Greg Sterling

Actually the original network connections are really purged/deleted as if I cancel the workorder the original network connections remain lost.

Hi Greg ,

yes, that is my problam the original network connections are really purged/deleted!

Sorry it took me a while To answer but I was on vacation.

so as i understand from your test the problem exists not only in my version 8.0.2 but also in the most updated version of the system.

The customer asks if now that we have found out the problem can it be fixed
in the next version of the system or otherwise?

Kind regards,

Yaniv Rozenbaum .

Hi Yaniv,

I'm sorry to disappoint you, it is working as designed. As mentioned already if we move a server that has network configurations to another location/rack, then its network connections would be cleared. So before making the move it is recommended to take note of the connections, so they can be recreated again (by user).

Kind regards
