snmp device using wrong ddf

Hi, We have had a new SNMP DDF created for some Airedale chillers, this has been uploaded to the server and displays the sensors as i would expect. The issue i have is we have other Denco chillers on the system which have now decided to use the Airedale DDF and now do not show the sensors correctly. Both chillers are using Carrel network cards but looks like maybe OID references are different accross the 2 devices. How can i force the denco chillers to use the original DDF on the server? Kind Regards

Stephen,

I believe that Carrel network cards allow you to define the SysOID in their web interface.  I am wondering if they are set to the same thing for the two different device manufacturers.  One of them may need to be changed an a new or updated DDF based off of that one, as the SNMP OIDs should change when the SysOID is changed.

Regards,

Cory

Hi Stephen,

Do you have any information on the card type used in these systems? The reason I ask is I've seen a similar issue in the past with Uniflair devices that use the old PCOWeb cards. There was no specific OID that could be used to identify the different devices so it would simply use the first Uniflair DDF it found. In that instance, there were 2 ways around this. 1 is to use only one DDF and build a second DCE VM for the other device / model (cost prohibitive) and the second was to use Modbus instead of SNMP. If you look in the 2 DDF files, I'm assuming the SNMP OIDs are the same which would point to something like this being the cause.

Oh, looks like I missed the mention of the Carel cards (which is the PCOWeb card) it looks like that IS the issue.

Hi the system OID is set to 1.3.6.1.4.1.8072.3.2.10 is it as easy as changing the 1st number to 2 and then edit the DDF so each OID starts with 2?

Kind Regards

Hi Steve,

Do not change any OIDs in the DDF for sensors or alarms.  In the DDF, near the top is a an XML element "oidMustMatch" or "oidMustExist". This is what defines which DDF should be used for a device.  So, as Cory recommended, if you can make the system OID unique on the device, then you can update the DDF to look for it. When changing the system OID, make sure it is something that is unique. I would recommend adding another period plus some number(s).  This way it still follows the convention for system OIDs and is still clearly identifiable as a Carel web card. Let's say you change the system OID from "1.3.6.1.4.1.8072.3.2.10" to " 1.3.6.1.4.1.8072.3.2.10.0" . Then, in the DDF, you would need to add this:

      .1.3.6.1.4.1.8072.3.2.10.0

If you already have an "oidMustMatch" element, you can just update it.  If not, you can add this.

Does that make sense?  Please let us know how it works for you.

Thanks,

Jake

Hi Jake,

Thank you for the information. i have done as you said and changed the system OID to 1.3.6.1.4.1.8072.3.2.10.1 and amended the oidMustMatch rule to match this. the device now discovers as the correct device but i am getting no sensors in my sensor list. The programmed alarms are visible in the alarm config tab of DCE though so it seems to have half worked....

Kind Regards

Steve

Carel pCOWeb cards do not provide enough information to determine what type if device it is.  This is partly because with SNMP, the standard is that OIDs have one and only one meaning.  Carel PCO cards violate this standard and re-use the same OIDs to mean different things.  Because of this, DCE can only have 1 device that uses a Carel PCO card.
