snmp device access

This question was originally posted on DCIM Support by Roberto Rumi on 2016-01-15

Hi All,

suppose to have a simple system composed by the following elements:

  • DCE
  • 1 device (for example a smart PDU)
  • an external BMS (third party)

Is it possible to implement the following architecture:

1) DCE talks to the PDU using snmp protocol

2) the BMS talks to the PDU using the snmp protocol as well

In other words the same snmp device should be addressed by 2 indipendent monitoring systems

Thanks

Roberto

Roberto,

This would be possible as long as the device is on the public LAN and both systems can communicate to it.  The SNMP settings on the device would also need to be setup to allow both systems to connect to it for polling.

Best Regards,

Cory

Hi Roberto.

I think there will be no problem with such configuration. But as Cory says the PDU should be in the Public LAN. Also using DCE Web-services API is an option to pull data from DCE into third party software.

Best regards,

Roman

Hi Roberto,

Another possible solution could be adding a Modbus TCP Output module (AP95MODBUS) to your DCE platform and having DCE pass monitoring data through to your BMS system.
