Dear Terrence,

In order to discover a device or generator that supports SNMP, please make sure that the device is accessed via SNMP version 1 or 3, and the required device file transfer settings (such as Read community string name, SNMP version 1 is enabled on the Generator web interface, SNMP port 161 is open) are correctly set in DCE while discovering, and required Device Definition File(DDF) is added to show you the parameters of Generator.

Please email your DDF request to Multivendorsupport@apcc.com with the attached request filled form(form, Generator MIB file, SNMP walk) to receive the SNMP DDF file.

SNMP DDF Request Form NEWEST.doc

You will also need to make sure that the following ports are open for the device.

Protocol Transfer Protocol Ports Network Comments
SNMP UDP 161 The bandwidth needed heavily depends on number of discovered devices, polling interval configured and alarm activity in the system. SNMP Communication between discovered devices and DCE
SNMP (Trap) TCP/UDP 162 Specified in device SNMP configuration SNMP Communication between discovered devices and DCE
FTP TCP 21 Used when device is discovered and DDF file transferred. The network requirements are low. Transfer DDF files between devices and DCE
SCP TCP 22 Used when device is discovered and DDF file transferred. The network requirements are low. Transfer DDF files between devices and DCE

There is also a Public APC K-base document/Video available that explains on how to discover an SNMP device in DCE. Please click here to view the K-base video. I hope this is useful.

regards,

Bala

Just because you can access a Generator in a WEB browser does not always mean it has SNMP.  Kohler is a classic example of that.  What generator and controller model is it?
