Why do only some of my servers auto connect the power in the rack.

Hi All,

I have a query, in some of my racks when a server is dropped in it automatically connects the power to the rack pdu's on other racks with the same server genome it does not, but I can not see the reason why from looking at the setup of the rack pdu or the pdu. Does anyone have an idea why?

Thanks

Andy

Could be a few reasons you're experiencing that behavior.

There is a preference setting which states DCO can auto-calculate connections.

Also, if you look more closely at your rack configuration. The rack pdu's have output power settings. Here's an example, this rack pdu has voltage output settings of 208V single or three phase.

The voltage output settings needs to overlap with the input voltage settings of your racked asset. So for a server like this sample Dell R610 which I set to accept only 120V single phase, this item will not automatically connect to my rack pdu's because of the mismatch between the rack pdu output voltage and server input voltage.

Regards

Hi Greg,

Thanks for your reply, I have checked the settings and they are as you have them.  The confusing thing is a server will connect to one side of the rack and not another? and then the same server in a  different rack being fed from the same source as the other rack will connect.

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy,

The auto connect only works if:

1) The Voltage must match up: the combination of PDU/PowerPanel output voltage, rack-PDU output Voltages, and server input voltage (can be set to support any AC voltage) must result in a valid voltage.

2) The rack/rac-PDU must has enough available power capacity to support the server - the purpose of the auto-connect is to find the best power-phase connection, and it does that by looking at the available capacity, so not enough capacity => it comes up short-handed...

Also note: if the rack is seen as having a redundancy of 'N', then the server will never be connected to more than one rack-PDU, because one connection is all that is needed for a 'N' setup.

Hope this helps

Gert
