Can I restore a backup file from an earlier version?
I had to rebuild my VM in order to upgrade to v7.4.1 due to disk space limitation. I ran a full backup of v7.3.1 and then rebuilt the server using the ova of v7.4.1.
Now I can not restore the backup file. Is there a way to fix this? at least the configuration file and not all the data.

Hi John,
No, the backup you're trying to restore must match the version to which you are importing that backup. This is due to a few reasons such as configurations that may have changed as well as probably most importantly, database changes that are made during upgrades. An older system for instance may not have the proper database for some of the changes made to a newer system.

Thought so. What about downgrading the server?
Can I import the backup file to a version of DCE which matches, upgrade the server, back it up, and then restore it?
I have two versions of DCE running and could possibly do that. Would I just have to restore the "configurations" file to get all the folders, users, and devices back? or do I need to use a full backup?
Regards,
J

Hi John,
If you're importing the backup into a different server, you may need to get new license keys.
Yes, you can backup an older version, upgrade, back up the current version, then restore back to an old version. As long as you have a backup, that should be fine. There can be some issues depending on the hardware though. For instance, if you have a brand new AP9475 and try to install DCE 7.0.0, the system won't have the proper drivers and won't install properly.
Yes, if you do a config backup, you get all the folders, users, devices, etc. The only thing you don't get is the data.

Thank you. I just redeployed the 7.3.1 OVA and am trying to restore the backup file. I posted a new post about since it seems to be taking forever and there is no way to monitor the progress after it ran through its initial process.

Hi John Smith,
I think it would be better if you deploy a fresh copy of VM DCE-7.3.1, then deploy your full backup to it. After that, you will be able to upgrade the DCE-server that you want.
With best regards.
