Pull System Message into DCE?

The newer PDU/UPS firmware has a System Message field under Configuration > General > Identification.

Is there a way to pull this info into DCE?  Would be super-useful to have this as one of the columns in the Device View.

There is a Comments field in DCE but - unfortunately - it looks like that data is stored in DCE only and doesn't sync with anything on the device itself...

Hi,

I put 2 requests in right after I answered, one for the NMC and one for DCE. I can’t say that either will make it into the products with 100% certainty.

Sorry @marting  but this is not an option.

The device itself would need to output that value via SNMP for DCE to automatically pull it. I edited that field on a PDU and ran an SNMPwalk of that device and the phrase I entered "This is a test for PDU system message" all or in part, was not output by the device via SNMP. So the NMC itself would need to be updated to allow for this.

Next, the DDF would need to be updated with the information with this new value.

Finally, DCE would need to be updated to allow that field as column option as not all data fields are available.

Your best bet is to create a custom property for the devices for which you need to see extra data. Yes, this data is held on DCE and not the device.

I can add a few enhancement requests for this but I do not believe this is a critical request and as such may not make i into the product, if at all.

Thanks,

Steve

Not exactly getting the system message automatically:

Alternative 1:

Get key system message and enter that under device's identification like Name, Contact & Location Field

Those gets pulled by DCE, and can be displayed:

Alternative 2:

Consider using DCE's custom description for device alarm?

Copy the system description from device to DCE's custom description field.

While it does not show directly in DCE device info, you can customize the notification email(short email) to pull this field using $USERDESC.

Thanks for the info @APC_Steve.  I was afraid that might be the case.

I do think this would be a useful feature so putting in the request wouldn't hurt.  But I won't hold my breath on it actually getting added.

I have been using the Comments custom property to store this info and that works okay; it would just be nice if it showed up in the device itself as well.
