Network port type select if DCIM under VMWare solution.

Hi Team ,

We are trying to plan DCIM under VMware solution , below architecture for your review .

I would like know if one 1GbE network port can fit this solution between two physical servers and share storage ?  Or it need two ports or 10GbE or fiber port?  Kindly advise and it would be appreciated.

Physical server : 10 core 2.4Ghz CPU , 32G RAM

VM DCE : 2core CPU , 4G RAM

VM DCO : 6core CPU ,20G RAM

Billy the port requirement is pretty much dictated by what you use in VMware.

e.g Fault Tolerant (FT) versus High Availability(HA).

Suggestion is to use FT for DCE, and HA for DCO.

i.e monitoring is critical, hence FT.

Follow the specs required on network speed accordingly.

Lastly, do contact your VMware partner to design the architecture for FT or HA accordingly.

Regards,

Chris

One , as the FT will be handled by VMware.

Hi Chu Li Wei,

I submit technically correct and almost realized DCIM project under VMware solution on your modified picture:

I will be glad to answer questions.

With best regards.

network port (10/100Mbps) , is this architecture okay ? Kindly advise , thank you very

much .

Yes, it is correct: just I didn't know that the abbreviation of "AS" means.

One more remark: this architecture is correct under a condition if both above stated physical VMware ESXi servers use local storages, i.e. internal HDDs. If for this purpose is used "Share Storage" instead of internal HDDs, then it is necessary to use 10Gbps Ethernet or 4/8/16Gbps FiberChannel (FC).

And one more note: anyway, it isn't dependent on type of storage for the physical VMware ESXi servers, don't stint, and buy for each server at least one (better two) small volume (to 256GB) SSDs. And then these internal SSDs can be used for very useful option in a configuration of VMware VMs, which is called "Virtual Flash Read Cache":

In settings of virtual HDD of each VMs DCE and DCO it will be necessary to enable this option and to allocate small volume Flash Read Cache, for example, to 16... 64GB:

It will already be enough dramatically to increase productivity of a disk subsystem in general.

Besides, considerably to lower load of physical CPUs VMware ESXi servers for DCE and DCO VMs, it is necessary to use not virtual LSI Logic controllers (are offered by default), and VMware paravirtual SCSI (vmw_pvscsi).

With best regards.
