When using the OS based protocols for discovery like WMI, SSH, and the VMware setting ITO should return server make, model, hostname, IP address, serial number and OS version. These are certainly useful for asset management. If guests are checked in the VMware discovery you should see similar info for guests in addition to their VMware host(s).
The out of band protocol, IPMI, should return power and server inlet temp info as monitored by the server's motherboard. The credentials used by IPMI are specific to the servers management card/port (usually an ILO, iDRAC, IMM or similar module).
In today's ITO I would recommend using IPMI to get power data.

Thanks Greg, we have been using IPMI however the struggle comes with the credentials and our in-house security policies.
The issue has been escalated, awaiting feedback.
Kind regards
