Does DCE support multiple Public LAN vNIC's?

I want to be able to use a separate vNIC on virtual DCE for backups to NFS. Is it possible to add secondary vNIC? Is this supported?

Hi Fernando,

The DCE VM can be set up for either a single NIC or a 2 NIC configuration. No more than 2 are supported. Additionally, the primary and secondary NIC cards should not be connected to the same LAN. The primary NIC should connect to the customer network and the secondary NIC should be a totally separate "Private" LAN with a different scheme. If the primary network is 192.168.x.x for instance, the private LAN should be changed to something different like a 10.10.x.x network..

Thanks,

Steve

Steve, Do I only need to add extra vNIC on VMware and then configure the IP settings from System Administration Settings -> Network Settings?

Hi Fernando,, Correct, Add the NIC on the VM host, add an additional NIC on the DCE VM settings, then an option should appear in the DCE console software to configure it. Steve

Steve, What DCE console are you referring to? I added the vNIC but don't know where to configure.

Fernado, the console software / application is the software you use to configure DCE. It is the same application you use to configure the backup.

P.S. If you don't have it installed, go to: http:///client/install.html where is the actual IP of your DCE VM. Hit I Agree and download and install the correct one for your OS.

Steve, So after adding the vNIC the Tab for Private (LAN2) did not appear. I had to login to the vmware console for my virtual instance of DCE using apcsetup then enable Private (LAN2) interface. Once enabled it showed up Network Setting as a tab. I'm guessing the same could be done for CDO?

Hello Fernando I was dealing with such stuff a several times two. At the vm version of dce and at the hardware one you need to be aware that you will not have the option to set a gateway at the second nic. At the operation server you can add a second nic as well, but due to the services of the dco are tied to the ip of one nic you will not be able to connect to the server using a second nic. What i did to workaround this was to do a ip vorwarding from first to second nic. This was working but is not a supporded solution at all. Best regards Patrick

Patrick, Thanks for the heads up. I guess the good thing about the network that the secondary NIC will be used is a non-routed Layer 2 only VLAN, so a default gateway is not needed. It does suck that a secondary NIC is not supported. Sounds like it should be a Feature Request.

Hi Fernando, A second NIC being able to work on the same network as the primary is not going to be an option in 7.x. Once we get to 8.x however, instead of an OS and application all in one, DCE is currently planned to be just software. In this configuration, there will be no specific private or public LAN. In fact, there will be no network configuration in the software at all. All IP configuration in such a case will be the sole responsibility of the host operating system. Sorry, I have no exact dates. Steve

Sounds like the application is moving the right direction.
