Hi Team,
Customer set DCE 7.2.7 Virtual Server with the storage size 1TB during the initial implementation and added another 5TB for the space to keep the survaillance data for a long time.
Now it is around 190GB only as used storage size total. They change their mind and want to minimize the storage size to 500GB.
We think it is possible and there will be no error to restore data to the smaller storage as long as the total data size is not over the allocated storage size.
Could you give us the confirmation and if possible please provide the best practice way to change?
best regards,
Yoshi

Hi Yoshi,
i suggest going with Blake's suggestion. I can tell you that if you allocate memory to DCE it will set to that size. If you then lower the size of the allocated drive, DCE will likely no longer start and I do not believe any data will be retrievable.

The best practice for reducing storage and volume size is to rebuild the VM structure as you want it; deploy a new OVA (DCE 7.2.7 file) there; and then do a full backup of the "old" server. Then you can restore to the new server/structure you created.
Knowing how file systems work; and how data can be destroyed; it is never a good idea to shrink a volume or partition on an exisisting VM as you never know exactly what part of the file system/structure will be deleted/destroyed. You could potentially damage your current machine.
Therefore; I always recommend to rebuild the system anew; then do a full backup; and restore that backup to the new system. After the new server has been running for a bit – say, about 3 to 5 business days – I would then go in and decommision the "old" server....and thereby reclaim all that SAN/disk space.
