Configure different DCE alerts UPS onBattery - self test V mains lost

Does anyone have a way to configure DCE to differentiate the alarms when A) a UPS goes onBattery in response to mains failure and B) the same UPS goes onBattery as part of self test activities?

We would like different severities and alarm policies applied in either scenario.

Thanks

Hey Ed,

If it is APC UPS, DCE already has that 2 events separated,with different severity, so there should be no issue there. Self test passed is informational, while mains failure is a warning.

You can then define the respective alarm policies from there.

If it is generic UPS, or where there is no default alarm created for on battery due to mains failure vs self test, ideally request a DDF to separate the two. Alternatively perhaps do the following:

  1. Create on battery with threshold alarm, where the time trheshold is the typical self test duration.
  2. If it is longer than the threshold --> due to mains failure
  3. Create another on battery alarm, which is immediate, for the self test.

    There are some points to take note of:
    1. You'll have 2 alarms for on battery: self test & mains failure
    2. Potential of false alarm if the self test duration exceeded the threshold set.

Hi Ed Tarento,

In this case is important role both the APC UPS model/type, and the firmware version of NMC or NMC2 card. Besides, is role of the version of the DCE server, namely its apcsmartups.xml DDF-file.

A few years ago, I also saw, that the DCE server generated alerst (warning and information) on UPS selftest start/end. But after updating the firmware of NMC or NMC2 card in UPS to current version, and also updating the DCE server, the alerts stated above aren't generated any more.

Above told belongs, for example, to the following APC UPSes:

Smart-UPS 1500 with NMC AP9619 firmware v3.7.2;
Smart-UPS 1500 RM with NMC2 AP9631 firmware v6.4.6;
Smart-UPS VT 40 kVA with NMC2 AP9631CH firmware v6.4.6;
Symmetra 48/96/160K with NMC 0G-9354 firmware v3.7.7;
Symmetra PX 500 with NMC2 AP9635 firmware v6.4.6.

At the same time the DCE-7.4.x server means.

With best regards.

P.S.: I strikethrough of the Symmetra PX 500 as in above the given configuration (the version of a firmware and the DDF-file), during selftest this UPS, the DCE server generates two warning and two information alarms.
