ATS AP7730 high phase load

We have an ATS model AP7730 with a phase load reading of 45 AMPs. Both the primary and secondary input power source are 20amp circuits. NMC firmware for APP is 3.7.0 and 3.7.4 for AOS. The controller FW version is 2.0.3 with date of 9/8/10. Is this a known bug that can be resolved by FW upgrade or should the ATS be replaced.

Hi Barry Patterson,

Please, share some screenshots, where you can clearly see what you are reporting. If this is the case, then with a high probability I recommend replacing this Rack ATS, as this indicates its malfunction.

If you have the time and desire, you can first just reboot the NMC of this Rack ATS: the problem may disappear. In addition, you can try completely to turn off it and turn it on again (if possible).

Further, you can update the firmware of this Rack ATS to the final version of v.3.9.2 (this is even recommended). In this case, it is very desirable to comply with all safety rules, so that IT-equipment does not lose power. But I doubt that this procedure will help fix the above mentioned problem of this Rack ATS.

With respect.

Can you see in the on-board data log where this was working for a while and then it sporadically jumped to 45 amps? (not available via the serial interface you have screenshots of if you're in there - it is available via web or FTP.) Just wondering how long it was in operation or if this happened when you powered it up.

You can try one thing first which issuing a "reset ATS Controller" command.  This can be seen in the web under Unit->Control menu or through the serial/Telnet/SSH interface, Main Menu->Device Manager->ATS Control.

Please read this first though: http://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/FA156352 because when you do this command, the ATS output turns off very briefly for 330-340ms. Some load/equipment can ride through this and other types cannot.

If this does not work, there is not too much else you can do beyond power cycle the entire unit. I am doubtful that will work but it is free to try.

After these suggestions, last thought is to replace it.

Hi Barry Patterson,

Many thanks for the screenshots: based on the correct indication of voltages, current, power and triggered overload alarm (red LED), it's very possible that your Rack ATS is still completely functional 😀. True, it is very surprising that Rack ATS is still working with a load exceeding twice the maximum permissible for long-term operation. It is amazing!

Therefore, I would first of all be sure of what equipment is actually connected to this Rack ATS and what power does this equipment consume? Here's where to start to find out the problem with this Rack ATS.

With respect.

Appears this ATS has had this issue for more than 2 years. No plans to upgrade firmware due to replacement next year.

Hi Barry Patterson,

I.e., I should consider that your Rack ATS is really faulty and it does not have such a big power load? I understand you correctly? Have you checked this?

With respect.
