ITA vmware external system - associate custom properties with VM guests?

Had a request from a customer to pull in some additional custom properties via ETL for vm guests that are discovered using the vmware vsphere external system integration.  As far as I can tell, custom properties can only be associated with the physical vmhost, not the vm guests themselves.

Is this correct?  Are there any other work arounds to this? 

The only one I can think of is to create a vm guest genome that would be used as a placeholder to associate these properties to.  It would have to be added to a rack, but would be "not mounted".  This way, the customer could search for the VM guest in the equipment browser and see the additional information.

You are correct as guests returned by the vcenter integration are not treated as assets so they cannot have tags or custom properties assigned. Guests are treated more like properties/custom properties themselves which are tied to a VMware host association.
