IEC 61499 is not segment specific. It is a system level design language for distributed information and control systems, and as such can apply to all segments ranging from continuous processes like refining and discrete processes like automotive.
However, the real power of IEC 61499 is it's ability to embed Intellectual Property in re-usable software components that can be plugged together to create an application. So segment-specific libraries complete the IEC 61499 approach, creating a plug & produce world of automation.
EcoStruxure Automation Expert extends the IEC 61499 event-driven function block approach by adding additional facets such as the HMI facet. This extended object is know as a Composite Automation Type (CAT's). A library of CAT's will be provided with EcoStruxure Automation Expert to allow application engineers to get up and running quickly. The initial focus will be on CPG and logistics segments, but this will expand over time.
