All of the MNB controllers are tested to the IEC EN 61000 standard which is a rigid test for surge protection where all I/O, Power, and Communications are subjected to a 20KV surge. During design, this normally results in having to add in extra protection so as to pass the test.
Communications within the controllers have optical isolation which protects the communications transceivers to transients.
