An alternative to Main Panel upgrade for EV Charging?
Many homeowners are planning for an EV in their future. Often this means going from 100 amps to a 200 amp main panel. This is a considerable expense. I think there is a huge market for a solution where the incoming power is split before the main panel, and used to power an EV Charger. Instead of replacing the whole panel, which might be fine without the demand for the charger, this stand alone solution would solve the issue less expensively. The only constraint that I see is the ampacity of the supply wires and the lack of equipment designed to accomplish this. Some EV makers have suggested that charging outside of the garage is a good idea. The system I envision would lend itself to a charger outside of the dwelling. If Schneider developed the hardware for this system, it would allow Electricians to offer homeowners a cost effective option creating an elegant solution to this problem. The demand is great now and will only grow with time.
