hello All,
I am new to Plant SCADA and Runtime manager. Whenever I open Kernel in Runtime manager, and try to run the following simple command:
TagRead("test")
I got this reply:
task still running, task hnd()=1.
How can i view the tag value? is it an error?
Thank you very much

The "Task still running..." just means a task has been spawned, but it has probably completed and closed.
I am not sure why the tag value doesn't display in the kernel display.
Calling other functions, like TimeCurrent() return the correct value.
It might be a defect or limitation.
What version of Plant SCADA are you using?
A different approach to debug live values, would be to call TagDebug() from the kernel cicode prompt or one of your pages. This will give you a popup window with a drop down list of tags to select from.
Let me know how you go. I'll also share any information I find.
Kind regards
Olivier

Thank you @olivier_vallee for your reply.
Yes. TimeCurrent() works perfectly, as well as TagDebug() (attached 01). I am using SCADA 2016, Version 8.0.138 (attached 02). I am curious why TagRead() is not showing the tag's value?!
I like to upgrade to the latest SCADA version. Do you recommend? Should I upgrade my license as well? Are there any costs involved? Am I going to restore my project without any problems? What approach do you recommend?
Many thanks again

The kernel isn't meant for typical usage scenarios, it is really just a debugging tool.
I am not sure why TagRead() does not show values in the kernel. It could be a defect or simply a limitation of the kernel window. If it is something you would like to pursue, I'd recommend raising a support ticket with AVEVA technical support, so that the R&D staff can take a closer look and give you a definitive answer.
It is always a good idea to upgrade to the latest version of Plant SCADA. It will contain the latest bug fixes and will receive future updates for some time into the future (see the support lifecycle policy on AVEVA Support Website for exact details).
With regards to cost on license upgrades, it is best to talk with your sales representative (your distributor for AVEVA or Schneider Electric?).
There are some small changes from 2016 to 2023 R2, you will likely need to make some minor changes (usually with regards to security enhancements) but it won't be that difficult to resolve. I think you can test this out any time, simply setup a VM, install Plant SCADA 2023 R2, then see what compile errors you get and estimate how much work it will be to resolve them.
Kind regards
Olivier
