I have a 550 powerchute ES series connected to a macintosh system 10.5.6. I know there is now drive for this system and the system recognizes the APC but it doesn't do what it could be done if i could use the drive.
Do I still need to connect the surge via UBS to my computer? isn't enough to plug in there the computer and external HD? don't I have the same type of protection?

i am not sure what you mean to be honest.
if you dont install powerchute software, and want your system to shutdown gracefully, you need to configure some options in System Preferences->Energy saver to make sure your computer shuts down gracefully when the UPS runs out of battery power. it is not REQUIRED to do this for the UPS to provide surge protection and battery back up but it is required to have your computer shutdown gracefully.
see my attached instructions.
other than that i am not sure what you mean if you are able to clarify..
