I have an XS900 that is connected to a PC, LCD and NAS device, along with a couple of wall warts for charging various PDA devices.
For two nights this week, between 2 and 3 AM, the UPS started beeping continuously and the red overload light is switched on. When I press the power button, the UPS goes quiet for a bit and then starts up again. It is now beeping continuously (for the past 3-4 hours) with three lights flashing on the front panel. Connected equipment won't come on.
First of all, how can I just turn off the device when this happens? Pressing and holding the power button seems to only reset it for a few seconds. My previous UPS had a master off switch.
Any idea what the problem is? This UPS is going in the trash today if I can't get this resolved. This is extremely disruptive to our household to be woken at 2AM.
This UPS has been running in this configuration for 2-3 years. I have the software installed and audible alarm turned off during the night. There were no battery power events, over-voltage or any other events in the software logs that I could see. Self test passed. From the software's perspective the UPS is fine.
Any suggestions before I trash this and get another (non APC) unit?
Thanks,
Sleep-deprived kokketiel

It sounds like the unit has experienced some form of internal fault. The unit may still be under warranty if you have only owned it for about 2 years or so.
When the unit goes into an overload condition without being overloaded, it would indicate the unit is faulting internally. At this point, to get it to stop it must go through a self test, and either it wont fault at that time, or it will and will continue to make the noise.
Pressing and holding the on/off button will only trigger a self test on the unit. To turn it off you should only have to press the button once. If this is not working, you may need to unplug the device and remove the battery.
You may want to call tech support at 1-800-555-2725.
